Dear Yenta:
The ball is in everyone's court. We are all trying to achieve the same thing. A
better New Hope. Just for FYI, Christine and I are one good terms. We have spoke without
you. Can you believe it? So sorry that you were not included in this one.
Fondly,
JCB
Letter to Yenta 06/15/01
Dear Yenta, or perhaps we should call you the Miss-Informer,
Recently, we were made aware of some comments on Dear Yenta regarding the Logan Inn. Had
they been general comments about the facility we would have dismissed them as petty small
town grumblers who have nothing better to do with their time. However, once they became
personal attacks and completely unfounded lies we decided to make one single public
comment.
First let's set the record straight regarding the owners of the Logan Inn. The Asplundhs
are long-time residents of New Hope and they are NOT, as some of you have suggested,
business people who, just "moved into town", seeking to "improve" it.
While they are passionate about the Logan Inn, they are equally passionate about breathing
life and business opportunities into New Hope. Petty jealousy and small town thinking has
clouded some of your reasoning. It is our goal to promote and more importantly increase
tourism to New Hope; however without facilities to accommodate these increased numbers
things will never change. It is comical that any of you would mention "sacred"
and "town square" in the same sentence. Come down off your high horses and take
a look around.
It is also amazing how in just a few short months many of you have glorified a historic
image of the Logan Inn that is completely inaccurate. Our question to you is "Where
have you been?". Over the past years, the Logan Inn fell into horrible disrepair. It
sat next to an empty lot which the borough often cited as a place for underage drinkers
and trash dumping. If this is what you all consider a historic treasure then it is time to
redefine the term. The
renovations to the building of the Logan Inn were designed around restoring the building
to its original glory. We think the renovations are quite spectacular as do our customers
- both old and new! As a result of the renovations, an intrinsic piece of New Hope's
history has been restored for generations to come.
The Magnolia Terrace - the outdoor bar is a beautiful place to listen to music, congregate
or just watch the scenery. Anyone who has had negative comments about the bar has
obviously never been there. Our clientele is unlike any of the others in New Hope. And,
push come to shove would you rather hear some nice live music 2 nights a week or hear the
constant roar of motorcycles revving their engines all day and night on Main Street. If
any of you are really concerned about the kind of people that might be drinking at an
outside bar then our advice would be do something constructive to create new business
opportunities.
Whether you personally dislike the Logan Inn is your opinion and we all know about
opinions. The fact of the matter is, the Logan Inn IS creating more business into New
Hope, which in turn creates a winning situation for all the businesses in town. In
addition, the renovations at the Logan Inn have prompted other businesses in town to clean
up, expand or just step up to the
plate.
Now in an effort to save time, let me just note the following:
Over the past years, New Hope has continued to take a back seat to other areas including
Lahaska. The Logan Inn stands as a cornerstone of what will hopefully be a resurgance of
business and tourism in New Hope. While we would all certainly like to live in an idyllic
country setting, there is still the matter of the businesses that need customers to stay
afloat.
In the spirit of a profitable and growing community, let's stop this
ridiculous nonsense and focus on what is really important.
Sincerely
The Logan Inn

Not one of the candidates has yet seen fit to publish (in black and
white) their positions on the issues. What's the poop? Back room politics yet again?
Positions changing like a daily pair of socks? Doing the bidding of the behind the scenes
players? No positions? Are the various parties' committee people also of this mindset?
Since the pay is negligible, there can only be a limited number of explanations for this
void of information (none of which are very appealing).
When do candidates freely publish "all" the information every voter needs to
allow the election process to actually have a chance at representing the wills of the
majority?

Letter to Yenta 06/13/01
I don't live in New Hope, but I have worked in town for a number of
years, and do live close by. I have observed what is happening in this area, and have come
to the conclusion that it is, to some extent, evolutionary.
For better or worse, New Hope is in the process of turning in to a typical "tourist
town", and moving away from that sleepy little river village so loved by many
artists. We are mid-way between New York and Philadelphia, and more and more area
residents
come from those two urban locales. Of course, this means that more and more enterpreneurs
seeking to establish businesses are also drawn from those areas. The most significant
recent development has been the "Union Square" which appears as though it will
be an upscale strip-mall. (I have no beef with the concept, in general, but has anyone
thought about the colossal traffic-jams their driveway will cause on Bridge St.?). The
poorly-concieved "dining pavilion" that now fronts the Logan Inn, hiding its
historic facade, is just another example of
businessmen who have moved into town, and seek to "improve" it. Unfortunately
time does not stand still; New Hope has been evolving, over the last thirty years, and
will continue to do so. If there is any hope to retain any part of the original ambience
of the town, the interested residents, workers, and town officials must
take action - soon! It is probably too late to save the Logan Inn, but there are
many more beautiful and historic buildings that can be preserved, if ordinances are drawn,
and building-codes changed. If changes are not made, I believe there is a serious risk
that the once lovely town of New Hope will become a very serious "tourist-trap",
with greater influx of nationwide "chains" of stores, restaurants, etc.

Letter to Yenta 06/13/01
Dear Yenta,
My wife and I were married on September 17, 2000 at David's Yellow Brick Toad in
Lambertiville, NJ (just over the bridge to New Hope).
The wedding was without doubt the most wonderful day of my life and we were particularly
lucky with the weather which was as clear as you could imagine and sunny and warm. Sadly,
the Yellow Brick Toad is no more, but our memories (and pictures) are still intact.
Unfortunately, the night of our wedding, we chose to stay at the Inn at the Ruins on Sugan
Street. Although we had some trepidation because of the Inn's policy of only dealing with
checks or cash, we decided the place was too lovely not to spend our wedding night there,
and paid in full, in advance, for all 4 rooms of the Inn to be used by me & my wife;
my wife's parents, the matron of honor and her husband and 3 yr old daughter; and a
bridesmaid.
WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS!!!
The proprietor, a Euro-trash-wannabe snob, who later claimed that the Inn is not a Bed
& Breakfast, per se, but "his home," refused to leave my wedding party alone
when we arrived and was nasty and rude for almost the entire 2 hours we were there. The
evening culminated into combat when my 69-yr old father-in-law spilled a little beer-foam
onto a glass table. The proprietor immediately asked my wife and the wedding party to
leave (I was upstairs at
the time) and said he'd give us a full refund to leave.
Naturally, my wife immediately accepted the offer since at this point in time they were
fearful of more episodes from the lunatic and then I proceeded to speak to him about the
refund.
Now to let you know in advance, I'm an attorney, and when confronted with these types of
situations, I tend to be far more reasonable than most other people (let alone attorneys).
I immediately asked everyone else in the party to wait outside because I didn't want the
proprietor to feel overwhelmed by 8 people demanding money from him and then proceeded to
speak
to him in a perfectly reasonable tone. I advised him that I wasn't
interested in suing him and that because my wedding day was so wonderful, I'd be willing
to forget this incident ever happened if he'd return 90% of our funds (I reasoned that we
were there for 2 hours and 10% for him should have been acceptable all things considered).
The proprietor then informed me that he had "no authority to grant refunds since my
mommy and daddy own
the place." Coming from a 40-something year old man, I found this
completely unacceptable and advised him that he'd be hearing from my attorney.
It is now 9 months later and after several back and forth calls to his attorney, I've had
to hire my own attorney (lawyers who try their own cases have fools for clients) and
institute suit against him for refusing to refund our money.
Please advise all you know that this place should be stayed away from as you are
guaranteed to have a creepy stay at the Inn.
Best regards ...
Andrew D. Baharlias, Esq.

Dear Judy,
Does your letter of the 11th to Christina mean that you are making
an overture to her to work together and share ideas and plans for
making New Hope a better place? If so, more power to you.
By the way Christina, now it looks like the ball is in your court.
Here is a chance to practice what you preach... what do you say?
Another match made in heaven by yours truly...The Yenta!!!
Letter to Yenta 06/11/01
Dear Christina,
If you would like to state your views, drop me a line.
Please e-mail me at jcbutl@cs.com . I also have some views that can work both for the
community and residents.
Judy Butler
P.S. All are welcome to reply!!
Letter to Yenta 06/09/01
Yet again (sorry for the repetition): For those on the ballot -
publishing your positions (on all the major issues of concern) would be greatly
appreciated. Without this, citizens cannot fairly steer the direction of their community.
Additionally, prospects for personal agendas running the boro greatly increase.
All those running are offering their time and energies to serve the community, and much
gratitude and respect are in order. The positions are neither easy or with great reward.
Publicly posting positions would help insure that those elected do in fact represent the
viewpoints of the majority of voters. This (in turn) could allow for a government capable
of making a real impact on the community.
Respectfully -vw
Yenta Column 06/09/01
Well, the Yenta is extremely flattered to know that there are
"Yenta-philes". The Yenta is not sure if that means the Yenta has made it, but
it certainly provides encouragement. Keep those cards and letters coming.
Speaking of that...CANDIDATES--WHERE ARE YOU??? The
world is waiting to read --yes, in print-- your positions on the issues of New Hope. Yes,
the world!!! You see, now when you run for office in New Hope, you can be sure that your
opinion will potentially be seen as one of the 400,000 pages per month read on the site.
As yet, none of the candidates have had the courage to view their opinions in public, in
writing for all to read and reread.
Hat's off to you Caroline Dechert. The Yenta is flattered and honored by your comments.
And Judy W., you are right on the money. Your thoughts, a well as those of Ian and others
seem to have fallen on deaf ears when it comes to the Logan Inn.
The Yenta assumes, that Karl is so busy making his plans for the
ferris wheel, that he hasn't even noticed the huge eyesoar and
overbearing intrusion that he has created in his outdoor bar arena. That's it, perhaps
gladiators should be added for entertainment.
As always,...
Letter to Yenta 06/06/01
Dear Yenta,
I was just about to give up forever on reading the Yenta. Some of the recent letters have
been just so inane! Anyway, thanks go to R. Iain Haight-Ashton for his comments. I think
he's right on in his opinions. I also believe that there is a "silent majority"
of people like me who are long time residents who have given up the faith in our leaders
and Borough Council.
Could all the recent bickering over the Police Department, etc.have been a mere diversion
from what is actually taking place in New Hope? I'm very tired of the small town (personal
agenda ridden) politics. Where were our leaders when the Logan Inn plans were in the
approval process? Don't we have an architectural (historical) review board? A zoning
board? Where ARE they?
I'm more interested in knowing why the plans for the monstrous exterior renovations of the
Logan Inn were not thrown out of consideration immediately and with impunity! AND... why
is the Historical Society so silent? Dr. Ricker (rest his soul) who founded the Society
would have waged a one man war against the outside bar. (The dining area is bad enough,
but the bar...ugh!) As a former board member of the Historical Society, I can tell you
that such a fuss would have been raised "in the old days" that the
developers would have left town in shame.
Mr. Asplundt should "do the right thing" and close the awful outside bar. I've
heard that the bar has not been fully approved by Council. If this is true, the Borough
Council needs "to do the right thing" too, and refuse approvals. Maybe even fine
Mr. Asplundt for arrogantly proceeding without approvals.
Maybe this is what the world is coming to... attracting the bar crowd to New Hope.
"Dumbing down" any hopes of culture and historical preservation. (I'm not a
purist...by the way, I think the building changes to the Logan Inn itself are rather
nice.)
Finally, two comments: I took my 85 year old mother (who's lived in New Hope since 1946)
for a ride through town last Sunday, she shook her head and said "Everything looks SO
strange", and to Mr. R. Iain Haight-Ashton's comment regarding the Ferris
Wheel...don't give him any ideas!!! Enough said, it's all so sad.

Letter to Yenta 06/06/01
As a new voice here, I'll take a moment to introduce myself. I'm
Caroline Dechert, owner of True as Touch Holistic Massage Therapy, which opened at 8
Stockton Avenue earlier this year. While I've been close to New Hope for many years, I
have refrained from much of the local political discussion since I'm a foreigner, living
in far distant Solebury Township. Now that I
am a New Hope business owner, I feel empowered, indeed obligated, to open my mouth. Should
my foot wind up firmly inserted, I'm sure Yenta-philes will be quick to let me know.
Meanwhile, let's return to an excellent point Christina Georgiou made in an earlier
letter, which may have been largely lost in the discussion that followed. She said
"In the end, I'd like to add that New Hope has always been diverse to an extreme
degree ..the thing that has saved us from serious division in the past has been
tolerance."
The extreme diversity of New Hope is indeed one of its most appealing characteristics.
While it offers many challenges, it makes the town interesting, exciting, and a lot of
fun. It's also one of New Hope's greatest strengths.
To Those who Wish to Revitalize New Hope: vitality depends on diversity. Communities in
which everyone conforms to a single standard stagnate. The meeting of divergent ideas and
standards impels growth and change. The '00's are shaping up to be a decade in which the
only constant is the constant acceleration of change around us. Diverse communities
possess the strength to adapt to changing circumstances, while communities which
enforce, or attempt to enforce, a single set of values and responses become rigid and are
swept away. I hope that you will have the wisdom to realize that, and to craft programs
that allow space for the wide variety of people and businesses in this town to keep being
wide and various. That will keep us vital. (And, yes, I'm busily working on my
questionnaire)
A question worth discussing: how can we choose to celebrate our diversity, and use it to
draw in other residents or visitors who are fleeing pre-fab cookie-cutter culture?
To Mr Asplundh and the Patrons of the Logan's Outdoor Bar: alas, diversity does need to be
limited in at least one extent. When your business begins to impinge on the rights of your
neighbors - by, say, creating a level of noise pollution that destroys the peace for
blocks around you - then you've overstepped your bounds. I don't want to be assaulted by
your music and television offerings. If you keep them indoors, where I can choose to go
not to go, that's one thing. By bringing them outside, you force me to
partake. You have no right to do so.
As for the other outdoor alterations to the building, I regret them
extremely. But, if a person chooses to destroy what most sensible people would consider
the primary value of his property, I suppose he does have a right to do so. The rest of us
will simply have to deplore it from a distance, and save plenty of old pictures so that a
future owner will have good documentation with which to undo the damage.
A question worth discussing: are there other local historic treasures for which we should
be seeking protection now, before they're lost forever?
To Local Office-Holders and Seekers: diversity has a price. As both Jan Witte and
Christina Georgiou have pointed out, tolerance is one necessary adjunct. Others are
openness, honesty, and integrity. It's a lovely thing in a politician to be able to state,
simply and directly, the principal problems facing constituents, what can and cannot be
done about them, and what one is willing to do. It shows genuine respect and concern for
constituents. It is the one single action that will allow voters to make a well-informed
decision. Of course, well-informed constituents willing to
make up their own minds based on the facts are pretty scary... Since I can't vote here in
town, I'd best leave it at that.
With respect, and thanks to the Yenta for providing this forum,
Caroline Dechert
Letter to Yenta 06/06/01
Why do we have yet another outside bar in New Hope? This one truly
must be the largest with the biggest TV set blaring so that everyone walking by can have
their senses assaulted. Are we trying to be Key West, Florida or Long Beach, California?
What message are we sending? This new addition to the outside bar scene is across the
street from the Perry Mansion in the heart of our historic town. I cannot bare to look at
this latest desecration to the once historic Logan Inn. Was it necessary to use every
available inch of space to pack in as much of a herd as possible into this new addition?
It is blatant and garish. What we have is another outside bar construct that gets in your
face. As an intellectual, I have only one question to ask, when is the Ferris wheel
going up?
Respectfully,

Has the smoke cleared? If so, the candidate's views and positions
remain to be heard. If our honorable candidates can see fit to "publish" their
positions, all the citizens could better chose directions for New Hope. Hopefully what can
be said in one-to-one politicking can be said to the public as a whole. If not - why?
Where' the beef ? - VW
Yenta Column 06/05/01
Really Judy and Christina...there's a fire in the kitchen and you
two are on the sidewalk deciding who is going to pull the fire alarm. You obviously both
care about New Hope, the problem is you don't agree on what to care about or how to do it.
Maybe you ought to look for the common ground and go from there. If the
town had more people like you two who had the guts to express their opinions and not hold
back, maybe it wouldn't be where it is. Instead of directing all of your energy and
negativism at each other, you should team up and try aiming your venom at the problems in
town and direct yourselves toward finding solutions.
By the way, on that note...isn't it great that there is a survey you can both fill out.
And, since you both have time to write to me, (and I do appreciate the letters)...maybe
you can allocate some of that time to getting people to sit down and fill out the survey.
Maybe, you could even get a copy posted on this site. Perhaps the town would do well to
find out what the rest of the country thinks the greatest strengths and weaknesses are in
New Hope. You guys in Palo Alto...any thoughts?
And, while we are on the subject of strengths, the Yenta
would hope that the history of the town would rank as the
number one strength of the community.
And that Judy, is why, when someone like Carl Asplundh, who
could have done so much for promoting heritage travel and tourism to New Hope by
maintaining the architectural heritage
of the Logan Inn and promoting its history as its premiere
drawing card, should be chastised and made to understand that
he has instead turned it into a roadside cafe which exhibits
complete disdain for the architectural integrity of the buildings, ignorance of the
historical significance of the building, and an obvious desire to ignore the desire to
keep the town center sacred when it comes to outdoor bars with folks hanging out watching
the ballgame on a TV monitor attached to a six by six log in the middle of some tacky
temporary (not) tent. Carl has the money and resources to make the Logan Inn a world
reknown heritage tourism destination which would have in fact made him money (obviously
his goal). Instead, he has gone the route of the typical
money man and added more of the same...as aptly put...by many
others.
Hey Carl, it's not too late to rip all of that stuff down and really do a wonderful thing.
What do you say?
Also, for those of you who think the Yenta is a Democrat...guess again. When it comes to
the politics of New Hope and its well-
being, there can be no politics, no parties...only wanting the
best for the town and for the people who live and visit there.
That has to be the basis of every decision and every vote!!!!
Til next time... The Yenta
Letter to Yenta 06/04/01
Dear Christina:
I choose to shrug off you comments regarding my intelligence. I also choose not to really
respond to your letter. I have decided not to let the "cattiness" of your letter
affect me. Everyone according to the first amendment has the right to free speech. How we
choose to implement it is our own business. You may have your views, as I do mine. You may
feel that the Logan Inn is a disgrace, I see it as a wonderful way to attract people to
our town. Come on now Christine, do you not have a business in this town? Do you not
prosper when town is busy? I know that many of my friends and just as many of yours do as
well. Just to let you know, I will no longer engage myself in this kind of letter writing
again. It is a waste of my energy. I have much more important things to focus on.
All the best, Judy Butler
Letter to Yenta 06/04/01
Dear New Hope Residents & Business Owners:
We need your help to successfully revitalize New Hope. The Community Initiative Committee
has circulated a survey to help identify our greatest strengths and weaknesses. Survey
results will be used as a guide to prioritize the tasks that lie before us. The outcome
will provide a baseline to measure our successes. We are asking all residents, property
owners, business owners and shopkeepers in New Hope to respond. This is an independent
survey and is being monitored by Elissa Marsden, the Heritage
Development Specialist. If you have not received a copy of the survey call June Bierman at
215.862.2102. This is your opportunity to get involved in the revitalization of New Hope.
We want to hear from everyone.
Letter to Yenta 06/03/01
I moved to New Hope February 26th, 1988. Since then I have been a
business owner and a resident.
I love this community and it's people. I want only the best for both.
I have no hidden agenda, just a desire to make the quality of life in our town the best it
can be. We are only on this earth for a short time. Let's make our time count.

Dear Yenta,
This is Eric Maywar over at The Book Cellar on Main and Ferry. My wife and I have
just finished celebrating our used book store's first year here in New Hope and would like
to thank New Hope for
a successful first year in business.
People and businesses have been friendly and welcoming. In particular we would like to
thank Farley's, A Stage in Time, our Scrabble players and our regular customers for their
active support. We have fallen in love with New Hope and hope to move our family here
soon.

Letter to Yenta 06/03/01
Dear Yenta,
Just wanted to drop you a line so those who doubt it can be informed that, yes, I
did indeed write that letter of 5/23 and I still believe in every word of it. I have never
had any need for anyone else to write my letters, nor would I ever allow such a thing.
As for the cattiness that Judy Butler's letter of 6/1 accuses the Yenta of, that is just
another symptom of the new depths of hypocrisy some of our neighbors have sunk to....If
it's not cattiness to disseminate meanspritied untruths about your neighbor, then perhaps
the appropriate word for such a
person begins with a "B" and is unprintable. (Incidentally, Judy, you could have
easily verified whether or not I wrote that letter, since your husband's business is next
door to mine. Perhaps it's just "so apparent" and not worth verifying because
all the long words look alike, an indication of relative illiteracy and ignorance...)
And Judy, since you obviously regard the preservation of this town's history with the same
apathetic (and pathetic) disdain you have for an untainted democratic process, let me also
respond to your letter of 4/27 regarding the Logan Inn renovations...
The Logan Inn renovations are a crime against future generations that will be deprived of
the first hand experience to see an intrinsic piece of New Hope's history intact. Any
possibility of a national historic designation for the building is GONE forever, a pity
for the 5th oldest continuously operating inn in America, as well as a shame for New
Hope---The Logan Inn was one of it's greatest assets. Countless artifacts of the 18th and
19th centuries
relating directly to New Hope's history (as well as quite probably having national
significance) were lost or detroyed by Carl Asplundh's refusal to allow the phase I
archeological study (which was called for by many local historians and probably would have
taken about a week, at little or no cost to Mr. Asplundh...) And the payoff for New Hope?
A geometric monstrosity that invades the entire street, a new facade that resembles the
pseudohistoric buildings in Lahaska to an eerie degree...and now you can now watch the
game on TV at their new outside bar (arrogantly opened prior to Borough Council's
approval, still pending) from across the street...and determine who's winning from a block
and a half away by the tone of the
hollering of the "high class" guests this travesty is supposed to attract...
The Logan Inn (as well as 52 W. Bridge street and the Red Canal Barn) has been destroyed
not only by a rich man's whim, but by the complacency of some of those who are in the
position to protect this town, as well as govern it...Too bad for New Hope that pursuit of
money and power do not breed class or taste!
Judy, there are big issues in this town, both old and new, and rather that attempting to
become New Hope's oldest cheerleader and ignorantly attacking your neighbors, perhaps your
time would be more wisely spent doing something REAL, like working with the Chamber of
Commerce to attract more business or starting a public landscaping project, if you think
this town needs a
pick-me-up so badly....Or, come to a council meeting once in a while (we never see you
there), and express your opinions there, where the final decisions are made....If you
truly stand behind your husband and this town, then you must know that picking fights and
making false accusations is not the way to restore harmony to our borough, or get your
husband elected....
On another note, may I add my opinion to the election fray? I think it would be invaluable
if each of the candidates were to publicly define, in his/her own words, both 'public
servant' and 'elected representative'...it might be very useful in helping the voter to
determine their selections. And a side note to Roger Butler...From our conversations I
know you to be well intentioned, but your perception of "VW" attacking you is
paranoid and
misplaced...You owe an apology...While you might personnally disdain people that do not
fully identify themselves, you are running for public office, and you should be eager to
discuss your views with any potential voter, particularly in a public forum with a large
audience such as the Yenta...To do less infers that you base your respect of an idea on
your opinion of the source it comes from, not it's own possible merits.
In the end, I'd like to add that New Hope has always been diverse to an extreme degree
..the thing that has saved us from serious division in the past has been tolerance, a
quality that I think is desperately lacking in some quarters of our humble little burg of
late....If we are to start taking a differences of opinion as not personal affronts to be
attacked on sight, but as intrinsic to the fabric of the very special place we all call
home, perhaps constructive debate and eventually resolution can occur....I, for
one, am looking forward to that day.
Sincerely,
Christina A. Georgiou
Letter to Yenta 06/02/01
I'm not quite sure how one can consider an "anonymous" request for candidates to
share their views with the public - as somehow morally offensive, or an attack. The
candidate's views and
opinions are the most important information in any election.
Hopefully all the candidates can see fit to freely publish their views on the issues
(without restrictions or requirements), so the public can make informed choices for the
direction of their
community.
Last time I looked, the constitution still provided private citizens with the right of
free speech and the ability to voice political opinions (without having to identify
themselves to the very politicians and police who are entrusted to protect those rights).
There seems to be three options for people running for public office:
1) Openly publishing a detailed listing of their views on the issues
2) Dispensing opinions piece meal, on a one-to-one basis (with the possibility of
tailoring the dialog to a particular voter)
3) Divulging little or no content and running on general rhetoric (i.e. time for change,
new directions and support for mom and apple pie).
Likely most voters are best served with option one.
All the candidates are probably running with honorable intentions and care deeply about
the community, and anyone running for public office in this contentious boro deserves
credit for that
fact alone. With regards to private citizens; some will voice their concerns anonymously
because they chose not to become immersed in the intimidation so often doled out in the
power blender of New Hope politics - where everybody knows everybody. Intent should be
judged by the validity of
the principles being debated, not the identity of the author. Hopefully all the issues get
discussed and argued over the coming weeks, and everybody keeps an open mind until
November. VW

Dear Yenta:
After reading all of yours and other have sent I have come to a strong conclusion that you
most be, by no doubt- a Democrat. Hey, that's your choice.
My name is Judy Butler, and I support my husband and this town 100%. I live in, love in
this town.
Come on people!! Is there not bigger issues, than the ones we are wasting our time on. The
cattiness, to write that my husband was wiped off the ballot ect......
Mister Yenta, I feel that you have already made your mind up.
Please tell Christina that she must stop having Bob G. writing her letters. It is so
apparent, by the context.
Until next time.

Dear VW:
Are you so obtuse as to assume that I want names, ranks and serial numbers from every

Dear Mr. Butler,
I'm not running for public office, you are. But - if every citizen needs to provide you
with their name, rank and serial number to be given the privilege of hearing your plans
for the public office you seek; you've said a mouthful. Maybe it could also be required
that each voter's selections at the polling booth must be publicly posted (with their
names) in order to be counted. VW

Dear Vw,
My name is Roger Butler and I'm running for Borough Council in November. You expressed a
desire for views from candidates.
If you want my views, then please identify yourself as other than VW. I'm at your
disposal, Home # 215 862-5753, Fax # 215 862-5005,E-mail, dietogolf@cs.com. I want to hear
from more citizens about their visions for New Hope.

Dear Yenta,
Maybe some of the candidates would be kind enough to send in to your column their ideas,
plans and some of the specific actions they would take if elected. What are their views on
historic preservation, enhancing a vital tourist economy and the infrastructure issues
facing the boro. What about their views on the police department and what they feel their
limits should be in boro politics and policy? It would be nice to cast a vote on specifics
rather than generalized rhetoric.

Dear Yenta,
RE: Your column of 5/30
May I please correct you on one point? My name is Roger Butler. I'm a candidate for New
Hope Borough Council in November. You stated that I was "wiped" in the primary
four years ago. This is inaccurate. I won in the primary four years ago. I only withdrew
my name from the November ballot at the bequest of a committee member who promised me the
endorsement the next time I ran. I ran again this year, (no party support again) but I won
again. Just maybe, New Hope is ready for change. Just maybe New Hope is ready for new
ideas.
Let's Talk, Roger E. Butler - Candidate for Borough Council
Nov. 2001
Yenta Column 05/30/01
Well, now we are down to the final eight, errr, uh nine that is
counting our one independent, plus of course our final two for mayor.
Let's see-- Larry Keller or Joe Knox? Larry has been wonderful at
hand shaking, fund raising and keeping in the public eye. But his
charge as mayor is New Hope is the police. The police department in this town has had
internal mahem for years, with constant controversy around almost every chief we've ever
had. It not only didn't improve under his charge, it became intolerable. Then, after the
police study, very little was ever implemented. Now here we are... Larry ran on a platform
that Jim Magill could no longer handle the police. Well, enter Joe Knox to run on a
platform that Larry Keller can no longer handle the police. Should be an interesting race.
What's your take?
As for council... the Elephants have elected from the primary rolls
Jake Fell (again!!!!??? the Yenta still can't figure that one out!),
Cathy Brown (staunch supporter of the former Chief of Police), Roger Butler (wiped out
last time in the primary... speaks his mind) and Rick Swanson (second trip through the
electoral process having been defeated in the last election).
The Dems have a more interesting slate...Sharon Keiser (incumbent heir to the throne of
president of council), Ed Duffy (also the second time to the final ballot having lost in
the last election), Rae Valesco (first time candidate, high energy and eager to listen),
and Randy Flagert (attorney with experience that might be valuable if he remains objective
in all of his decision making).
And of course, for those of you who have lost faith in the process, Bob Gerenser is
running as an independent. And he is just that... an independent free thinker who will
speak his mind. You may not always agree, but at least you know he is not being influenced
by money, power or political party line.
So...who are your choices and why. As we approach election day the Yenta will be
monitoring the candidates positions. All are free to express their views... penned or
anonymously... on the election.
This one should be interesting...as always.
Hi Bob Rush and Family,
The Yenta is happy that you checked in with him/her and wishes you and your family the
best in your new home and community. Your comments are always welcome, and your
involvement in the community is needed. By the way, can you get me a TV spot?
If you haven't read Christina Georgiou's letter of 5/23, do yourself a favor. READ IT!!
Especially you... "Saddened and Bemused" You need to reconsider your thoughts of
the 21st.
And Bert Johnson... Congratulations!! You finally got the guts to
call the mayor and Richard publicly for their obvious involvement in the police
demonstration, despite their denial. Your call for an
apology for abuse of their positions is highly commendable. Too bad you couldn't function
like this for the past eight years.
Til next time.... The Yenta

Dear Jan:
I couldn't agree with you more, and I'll take Mr. McCain's statement one step further.
I think tolerance of dissent is the hallmark of a great people and a great nation.
Let's not confuse "dissent" with "dissension."

Obviously Jerry Speziale was a witness to an incident and was not
charged as a co conspirator so why dont you read into dirty polotics you fool! Jerry
Speziale will win by a landslide because he is a great law enforcement professional!

Hi Yenta, my dear friend:
Well, we're moving into North Pointe in the next 8 months or so.
But please - don't be afraid! We won't ruin the neighborhood! We're moving to New Hope
because it's been our dream for 8 years. Here's a brief overview of what you're getting:
I am a Chiropractor (I practice in NE Philadelphia) and a rock
musician (I play with a number of classic rock bands that had hits in the 60's). I'm also
an artist. My wife works for a talent manager out of NYC and LA and she and our two girls
are singers and actresses. So, you see? Where else are we supposed to move? :)
Please put us on your mailing list, if you have one. If not, well
then, we'll just keep looking you up and reading your articles.
Warm Regards,
The Rush Family (I'm Bob)

To quote John McCain recently:
"Tolerance of dissent is the hallmark of a mature party."
New Hope is a town with 2,000 differing opinions. We're of a wonderful community, but not
necessarily of one mind. Dissent and disagreement are part of any municipal structure, and
all political parties should accept (and expect!) it within the framework of democracy. As
long as the comments aren't nasty, malicious or untrue, dissent has a (sometimes)
uncomfortable - but important - place among us.

Dear Sadden and bemused:
I respect your opinion, and I applaud your interest in our community that prompted your
letter to The Yenta. However, I still have a problem with people that refuse to identify
themselves with their views. I will always let my views be known to the community. I hold
nothing back.

Dear Yenta:
Re: letters to the Yenta of 5/18 and 5/19:
Both letters addressed the presence of uniformed and armed police officers
attending a Borough Council meeting in support of mayor Keller. Their views were
conflicting. However, I find it disturbing that neither writer identified themselves as
other than
"concerned citizen" and "another concerned citizen."
I tend to discount the veracity of letters sent by people unwilling to identify themselves
with their views.
I have never, nor will I ever hide my views behind a cloak of anonymity.
I want only the best for New Hope. If you also embrace my love for this community, please
honor me with your vote in November.

Letter to Yenta 05/23/01
Dear Yenta,
Having been a resident of New Hope for 13+ years, a merchant for 4, and a regular attendee
of borough council meetings for the last 5 years, I have to say I was truly amazed at
tonight's borough council meeting when Richard Hirschfield tried to explain (with his bare
face hanging out) that uniformed police officers at a public assemblage one week before an
election were not a political statement, nor were they representatives of the Borough when
they vented their views fully uniformed....The basic flaw in the logic is that an employee
of the Borough wearing the uniform of their office can ONLY be representing the borough
while wearing it...So which is it, Richard? Do they represent the views of the current
ruling majority, and their uniformed presence meant to enforce that viewpoint, or did they
violate Borough Code by
appearing at a public assemblage, (further damned by political motivations) in uniform,
while off duty, without prior written permission? And if this action were condoned, who
condoned it, and then LIED to the public by denying it (Mr. Hirschfield, Mr. Keller, are
the obvious choices....)...And in the best case scenario, if NO ONE knew that such a
display were in the offing, I must ask, who is in charge of the police department, if
anyone?
This is not to criticize any officer individually for the action....It is
clear that the police department is lacking in experienced leadership that would have
constructively dealt with the anger felt by the officers by what was said in the
newspaper. (Mr. Keller, Mr. Hirschfield, what exactly is your experience in police
matters, before your current positions? And what have either of you done to become more
qualified since you took charge? And perhaps some input from a member of the public other
than the fired and
unelectable Mr. Brobson could be considered?) A more experienced and educated leader would
have taken the more correct and appropriate step of addressing the initial criticism that
appeared in a newspaper, in that very newpaper, perhaps as a rebuttal in the form of a
letter to the editor, or perhaps by requesting a followup story in which the officers'
opinions could be expounded upon...The illconsidered, kneejerk reaction that was the
response of our police force at the council meeting before last does not instill
confidence that the public's welfare is the foremost thing of importance, or that current
leadership is strong or skilled.
Police officers are certainly people, and citizens with the right to express an opinion.
That opinion in this case would have been appropriately expressed had the officers shown
up at the meeting in plain clothes, as ordinary citizens and borough employees airing
their particular grievances, not wearing the mantle of law enforcement personnel, and
using public resources (police cars, as well as the gasoline that fuels them, both
belonging to the borough) to express private opinions.
Such a small thing, yet the ramifications are disturbing...A show of
uniformed force such as the one displayed is not only extremely intimidating to citizens
with contrary views (particularly when that display is made between those citizens and the
only available exit), it leaves one with the impression that our officers take the special
privileges afforded to the police (in order that they may do their duties as public
servants) as personal dispensations that render them immune from the regular channels of
democracy that the rest of us are subject to.
And to all those who write so loudly in the Yenta that we should not be intimidated if we
have done nothing wrong, I have two things to say to you:
1: If you're so unintimidated, why are you all too cowardly to SIGN YOUR NAMES?
2: The only reason to be afraid in Nazi Germany or Communist Russia was if you broke
the laws...or disagreed with the ruling majority....
And the thankful fact of the matter is that we live in neither...Too often anyone who
expresses an opinion that is less than cheery about New Hope is accused of being negative,
but positive change cannot occur until the current situation is assessed accurately. The
fact is, it is dangerous and WRONG for the offices of law enforcement to become involved
in politics as an agency;
history has proven repeatedly that the only possible outcome is the suppression of
democratic process and a literal bully pulpit for those that such a corrupt agency serves.
I do not believe that New Hope's situation is quite this bad...yet. Thomas Jefferson is
quoted as once saying,"Eternal vigilance is the cost of freedom". Consider this
letter a vigilant effort to protect the liberty of ALL the citizens of New Hope,
even those that will spend the next bunch of weeks trying to rip my opinion to shreds
based on
disagreement or association.
Respectfully submitted by yet another concerned citizen,
Christina A. Georgiou
Letter to Yenta 05/22/01
I support the presence of the New Hope police at any town council
meeting where the hiring and firing of their chief is the hot topic of discussion. We need
to start supporting these people in council meetings and on the street.
The ridiculous bickering I see on this web site that goes on between our supposed
"leaders" is an absolute joke to those of us who are ordinary citizens and
reside in this community. If our children behaved this way, we would make them sit in the
corner for a well-deserved time out. Shame on all of you. When you hired
these officers, you entrusted them with those weapons and can rest assured that they know
how to use them and store them safely. An officer's weapon is an integral part of his/her
uniform, and they would not be properly dressed without their weapons. I
feel completely safe when I am talking to an armed officer because I know I haven't given
him/her cause to use it. Perhaps the council members feel differently?? And for good
reason?
To the officers of the New Hope Police Department: Some citizens of this community
appreciate the work you do and we are so sorry that the town leadership is more worried
about your weapons than they are about solving your very real leadership problems.
Just in case you are interested: I am not in any way related to any police personnel or
anyone else involved in the town leadership. I am just an ordinary citizen who reads this
Yenta column and I am convinced that no one in the town's leadership is qualified to serve
there. I got my information from what those "gentlemen"
have posted to this column.
Respectfully,
A Saddened and Bemused Citizen
Letter to Yenta 05/19/01
Having armed police officers pushing their views at a council
meeting is wrong by any rational standard. If this is to be acceptable policy, then the
boro should enact an ordinance allowing all citizens attending council meetings the right
to strap on a 44 magnum and have it in plain view when espousing their opinions. Lethal
weaponry and the uniforms identifying those with the power to enforce the laws can have an
intimidating effect. For example - some folks might think they could get a slower response
to an emergency, if they openly disagreed with armed and uniformed officers. Regardless of
who (if anyone) authorized the display of uniforms and guns at the meeting, it diminishes
the basic precepts of a democratic process.
Another concerned citizen!
Letter to Yenta 05/18/01
Certain council members are screaming and yelling, saying that the
police violated policy by coming to the Boro Council meeting in uniform. They are quoting
policy made by the former chief, but yet they fail to mention that if the officers are
authorized to do so, they can. What I have read in the papers is that Cpl Goss approved
them attending the meeting in uniform. That
does not mean they have to get paid to do it. Also Cpl Deluca WAS NOT AUTHORIZED to direct
traffic at the aids walk in DEC. This is just another example of certain council members
only giving the public half the information to make themselves look good. It is time for
them to stop, the only negative statements about the Boro in the newspapers anymore always
come from Bob Gerenser. Bob if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say
anything at all.
Thank You...
A concerned citizen...

Abuse of Power or Lack of Management?
I am writing this letter because I am concerned about an incident that occurred at the New
Hope Borough Council meeting on Tuesday, May 8. Twelve members of the New Hope Police
Department were lined up at the back of the high school cafeteria (our meeting room) in
uniform and carrying weapons even though they were not on duty. I immediately asked Mayor
Keller why our
entire force was present except for the senior ranking officer, Corp. Frank DeLuca who was
sitting in plain clothes in the front row. (he normally attends meetings as a private
citizen when he is off duty). Corp. DeLuca also asked if there was some reason why the
entire police force was present since he was not informed of this assemblage. The Mayor
responded that he did not know why the police were there. I asked him since he was the
civilian supervisor why he was not informed? I also asked president of
council, Richard Hirschfield why our entire police dept. was present and he said he
didnıt know. I requested that they ask the police why they there and that they be asked
to leave and return in civilian clothes if they were there as private citizens. My
requests were ignored but it soon became apparent why the police were present. The Mayor
read his report which was a condemnation of Councilman Gerenserıs supposed comments he
made in a local newspaper regarding the Mayorıs interference with a police investigation.
After the mayor finished his attack of Councilman Gerenser, Corp. Goss was recognized. He
read a statement from the police also attacking Councilman Gerenser and that they
supported the mayor. I feel it was extremely inappropriate for the off duty policemen to
make such a demonstration in uniform because it could be intimidating to everyone present
including the audience and the council person being attacked. The demonstration violated
the Borough Code, paragraphs 1190, paragraph 6 as well as the department
policy on uniform regulation which states ³all members of the service must have prior
written approval by the Chief of Police to be in uniform outside of their assigned shifts.
Additionally, no member of the service will wear a uniform shield or display ID card while
participating in a rally, demonstration, or other public assemblage. All members of the
service in violation of the policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Mayor Keller,
you invoked this uniform regulation to give Corp. Frank DeLuca a written reprimand when he
voluntary directed traffic for the Aids Candle
Walk Vigil in December. You also dismissed a policer officer from a hallway outside a
borough meeting because a citizen complained of feeling intimidaed. After the police
spoke, alleged victim of the investigation spoke and suggested she felt intimated by all
the police presence. My question to Mayor Keller and President Hirshfield is why did they
allow this police action to take place when it was in violation of the police rules and
borough code? The mayor is liaison to council and the citizenry and it is obvious that the
action was politically motivated. To further my contentions, the mayor read a proclamation
supporting his running mate and x-chief Mr. Brobson which I believe was a flagrant
violation of the Borough settlement with Mr. Brobson. Mayor Keller, I request that you
stop abusing your position as mayor to further your and your running mates political
agenda at the expense of the citizens. By the way, the citizens paid for the entire fleet
of vehicles to come to and from the meeting, some
coming 20 miles one way. Mr. Mayor, this police demonstration was either sanctioned by you
or you are not properly managing our police department if they would take such an action
without giving you or council prior notice. As a council person, I had no prior knowledge
of the police coming or of your proclamation on behalf of your running mate, Mr. Brobson.
Both of these actions took place at the only meeting before the primary election in
whichyou are running for reelection.
As a citizen of New Hope, I expect your to use your office to obey our laws and not use
your position for political gain. I believe you owe all of the citizens of New Hope an
apology.

Regarding police and politics: Please read the article on the Webboard (A Recounting of Events Regarding
CWA Local 1081s Abject Opposition to Jerry Speziales Candidacy -
click on Politics section and it's the article titled Jerry Speziale).
If even a portion of it is true (and some of the news articles can be referenced on the
newspaper's websites) - who in New Hope Boro was responsible for investigating Mr.
Speziale's background before hiring him? Were these allegations and litigation ever
broached with him for his side of the alledged events. Either way - armed public officials
have no place wielding their views in a council meetings or polling place period. The
article may or may not be accurate or without political motivations by his opponents,
but at minimum it appears some of the litigation was well documented long ago.
