Letter to Yenta 05/09/01

Elaine - those of us who may be your supporters were disappointed with the outburst against Larry Keller last evening - it was tacky, uncalled for and definitely out of line.

The Observer.

Letter to Yenta 05/09/01

Dear New Hope Voters, PRIMARY VOTERS BEWARE

Republican Candidate for Mayor, DAVID FLEMING has written us a letter that is dated May 5, 2001; whereupon he introduces himself and provides us with “The Facts.” After
reading this letter several times, I feel it is most important to advise the residents of the Borough that Mr. Fleming’s letter may not be all that it’s cracked up to be.

Campaign “mud-slinging” is an unfortunate reality; an activity practiced nation-wide these days. However, an outright intentional attempt to mislead the residents of New Hope by twisting and distorting “The Facts” is really something to watch out for in Mr. Fleming’s letter. In addition, if he wants to list facts, I really wonder why he can’t do so without injecting his own editorials and conclusions. Does Mr. Fleming think that we,
(The residents of New Hope Borough) can’t think for ourselves?

According to Mr. Fleming’s Fact # 3, Mayor Keller won by only 14 votes in the last election. Very good Mr. Fleming…you got that one right! But how in the world did you ever conclude that Mayor Keller “…was never a strong candidate.” Now let me see…if you win by only 14 votes…you weren’t a strong candidate, but if you win by 22 votes…somehow you have miraculously just won a “land-slide” election??? After all, everyone knows about Mr.GERENSER’S land-slide victory in the last election…he himself was announcing this to everyone he could find who would listen to him. How is by 14 votes…”not a strong candidate” and yet Mr. Gerenser’s 22 votes a “land-slide victory?” Mr. Fleming, what kind of picture are you trying to draw for us?

It is not my intention to address every “Fact” that Mr. Fleming has presented. However, the above is an example of Mr. Fleming’s pathetic attempt to sway us into the never-ending distortions that he seems to have mastered. His Fact # 2 with regard to Mayor Keller’s victory only after a change to engage in police reform…is this sour grapes or what? How dumb does this Candidate think we are? Where is he getting this fact? Or is this really an opinion or a speculation? I don’t believe this is a “Fact” at all. Fact # 7 indicates that Mayor Keller selected a subordinate officer to fill the vacant position; that council intervened his selection and placed the Senior-most Officer, Frank Deluca in that position. This fact is trying to indicate a wrong move by the Mayor. But in reality, the Mayor appointed the “most qualified” Officer for the position. Mr. Gerenser claims it is stated in the “Book” that the Senior- most Officer should be appointed. Let me tell you something.…There is NO such Book! Senior-most Officer doesn’t mean “best” Officer for the position. Again, Mr. Fleming presents us with fog and haze as to what were the real “Facts” at the time. Incidentally, Fact # 9 where upon the Mayor issued a Suspension Order against the acting Chief, Frank Deluca….and the National Weather Service with it’s hurricane warnings…did Mr. Fleming include to us why Officer Deluca was issued the Suspension Order…..NO….of course not. Does this tell you something?

Okay folks, clearly you see my point. Mr. Fleming’s letter is really a bad painting. The picture he draws is one with tunnel vision, opinions, generalizations, and colorful imagry.
We have all seen the mess these people created in the Borough. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that people like Mr. Fleming have their own agendas that feed the self ego without regard for the expense they cause…be it personnel, money, policy, and so on. We recognize is that our community is at state here. I respectfully submit this to all of you who are familiar with the saying, “Buyer Beware!” Mr. Fleming’s “Facts” fall short when presented unsubstantiated. Furthermore, I can not believe this person would think that the residents of New Hope are so gullible.

Is all the noise really convincing? I don’t think so. There is a lot to be said for the power and integrity of the understated. I was born and raised right here in New Hope. I have grown to see many changes. Given Mr. Fleming’s letter, I would close with the following: PRIMARY VOTERS BEWARE.

Very Respectfully Submitted,
xxxxxxxxxxx

Letter to Yenta 05/05/01

Dear New Hope Republican Voter,

My name is Dave Fleming and I want to be your Mayor. I have written to you previously telling you about my qualifications my platform and myself. I even sent you a copy of my résumé. I invited you to my fund raiser party/rally to meet and listen to you. I have written letters to the papers and the Yenta. I have even opened a web site to hold all of the information that you will need to make an informed choice, in the Spring Republican Primary, to be held May 15th, 2001.

I am running against the incumbent Mayor Larry Keller. Up to this point in the campaign, he has done nothing.

Let me explain to you what is going on in the primary. The only
excitement is in the Republican Primary. There are two candidates for Mayor, and you may select one. In the Borough Council race there are six contenders for four seats. I must tell you about the issues. I don't want to be thought of as running a negative campaign. I don't have to. Speaking facts is not negative. So let me give you some facts.

1. In 1997 the Council candidates who won ran on a Police reform ticket.
2. It was only when Keller promised to engage in Police reform, because his opponent was, that he won.
3. Keller only won that election by 14 VOTES. He was never a strong candidate.
4. Once sworn in, Keller opposed all efforts of the Borough Council to reform the Police Department. The Mayor did everything to obstruct the Police Study( view it on my web site newhopeunderground.com)
5. The Mayor refused to work with Council to implement the study. This eventually led to the firing of Police Chief Robert Brobson.
6. The Mayor continued to aid Brobson by convincing him that he didn't have to obey Council. This caused much expense to the town.
7. To fill the gap the Mayor first selected a subordinate officer,
sympathetic to Brobson, to be in charge of the Police Department. It was only on the direct intervention of Council that the senior officer, Frank Deluca, was put in charge.
8. The Mayor badgered and micro managed Deluca making him respond to an endless stream of conflicting orders by submitting handwritten answers.
9. As Hurricane Floyd approached in September of '99, when the Mayor knew the Police Department would be short handed due to vacations and injuries, the Mayor issued a suspension order against the acting chief. The National Weather Service was broadcasting an official Hurricane Warning and we needed
"all hands on deck". Yet on that day, our next ranking officer went home at 3:PM. Our acting Chief was forbidden by Keller to come to work. (All this while one citizen lay on the rain soaked ground suffering from a heart attack and a senior citizen civilian was left to direct traffic at a busy intersection!) This fact in particular points up Keller's preoccupation with self serving issues rather than paying attention to doing his job for the benefit of our town.
10. About Robert Brobson. One of his failings was that he invented his own comp time (read the Police Study). This cost the Borough dearly. In addition Brobson has collected $112,500.00 in settlement from the Borough plus an additional large amount of money paid without the knowledge of the entire Council by the Boroughs insurance policy.
11. After Brobson's attorney worked real magic for him, Brobson turned around and stiffed the guy for the legal fees. If it is about Brob$on it is about the money.

These are all facts and I could go on with more. Rather let me tell you what I will do.

I have repeatedly called for a debate on these and many other issues with the incumbent Mayor. He has not responded. Folks, it is really very simple, I have shown you my platform, resume', and qualifications. Mayor Keller has given you intrigue and expense. I am running on my record. Mayor Keller is running from his.
1. If you elect me Mayor I will implement the Police Study immediately.
2. I will work with ALL the members of the Department to lead them in a professional manner. That will improve moral.
3. I will be a sounding board for citizens and a liaison between them and local government.
4. I will highlight the best that New Hope has to offer so that we can end the negative publicity.
5. I will direct Community Oriented Policing. I will place community first and special interests last.
6. I will reestablish the DARE program and pledge to fight the growing problem of drugs in our youth community.

It is time for a change. Enough is enough.

I am asking for your vote. I am also asking you to vote for people who are not Brobson supporters. All of the official "endorsed" Republican candidates are Brobson supporters. See the enclosed flier on how the ballot will stack up.

See you at the poles,
David Fleming - Republican Candidate for Mayor Lever 27A

Letter to Yenta 05/03/01

Dear Yenta:

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Chris Flynn. I am running for one of four seats in the May primary for school board director of the New Hope - Solebury school district. I have been involved in the district on numerous levels over the past three years to include classroom involvement and presentations on cultural diversity, work on the attendance committee for the district, the strategic plan for curriculum committee and the scheduling and instructional time committee. I have been attending school board meetings regularly for the past
three years. I am fully aware of the numerous issues facing the district. Growth will be a big concern over the next several years, along with curriculum development and renewal, and accountability issues. I see the opportunity for change with new leadership and new ideas. Let's work together as a community to strenghthen our district to the benefit of all of the interested parties, but especially to the children, They are our future!

I have a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master's of Education in Administration. I have taught for several years and worked as an administrator at the Easter Seal Society for ten years. Most recently, I was director of Christian Education at my church.

It was brought to my attention that I am not a supporter of the arts or Artists in Residence, and hence you should not vote for me. My husband and I have provided financial contributions to AIR in order for them to continue providing quality services. Additionally, we have forwarded information about AIR to the Pennsbury school districts' board of directors for consideration with our recommendation of their quality services. My husband is looking into the possibility of becoming a corporate sponsor.

Needless to say, we are both very troubled and saddened by Mrs. Elliot's negative comments regarding me as a candidate for school board. As a non-profit organization, that organization may not participate at all in campaign activity for or against any political candidates. The statements made at the fundraising activity constituted such a political activity. I feel saddened that the "captive" audience had to have their evening interrupted for politics.

We were attracted to this area because of the diversity and cultural richness of the residents and vendors. It is true, I am not an artist. I am artistically challenged to draw a stick person; however, that does not mean I do not appreciate the arts and the numerous benefits provided by the arts. It also does not mean that I don't support the arts. My husband and I support the arts privately and without fanfare.

In closing, I would like to say thank you to Paul and Jan Witte for keeping an open mind in our discussions. Thank you!

Chris Flynn

Letter to Yenta 05/03/01

To the Yenta:

My wife Jan and I are always inspired when we witness the devotion of our community in the support of worthy causes, and once more it was evident for Artists in Residence, a particularly important cause. The extra lively bidding helped along by the capable skills of Mayor Keller suggested that it resulted in a financially successful evening as well.

One surprising inclusion during the introduction by Robin Elliott was a political appeal to vote for Sharon Shaw, a candidate for school board. She went on to discredit another candidate, Chris Flynn, by claiming that she has not been supportive of the arts in the past.

These political views were inappropriate for many reasons and I believe that it is important for AIR to disassociate themselves from her comments. The most important reason is that AIR jeopardizes their tax- exempt status by engaging in political campaigning during public events. Also, Robin Elliott did not do her homework or she would have discovered that Chris Flynn’s husband, Philip, a senior partner in the accounting firm of Flynn, Horlacher & Parker, sent 2 checks, totaling $200.00 to AIR since Nov., 2000. His letters to AIR also lauded their programs and he made a request for information that could help him provide additional support for them in the future. Ms. Flynn has also spoken publicly about her ideas to more effectively utilize AIR programs, which made good sense to me. It would seem that the commitment by this couple is precisely the kind of involvement that AIR should seek and should rejoice when found.

There are many of us who, when attending such a function, are hoping to escape negative political speeches. Jan and I are not even certain which school board candidates we will vote for, but the one certainty is that Robin Elliott’s remarks did no favors for either AIR, Sharon Shaw or Chris Flynn. Such statements unleashed to a large captured audience damages everyone for the reasons above and should have been checked at the door.

Dearest Yenta, Before responding to Judy Butlers defense of the Logan Inn renovations, I had to take a few thousand deep breaths, pause for a few days, and try to temper my words in a way that would not create instant bleeding in the brains of those who would have read my initial response. Now that I am
cool, calm and collected...I will proceed. I would like to know, how these renovations will help the borough as a whole? Did they create more parking? Will the people eating outside under the
roofless sidewalk cafe actually spend more money in the shops that surround the Logan Inn? Will the renovations actually draw more tourists to New Hope than before the renovations? How much more money will actually end up in the boroughs coffers as a result of the renovations? If it does create an economic boom in New Hope, then I have a few more suggestions. Lets put neon around Chief Logan's sign so that it can be seen clear across the river in Lambertville so that we can draw away some of their
customers. Why not place a drive through fast food restaurant at the Parry Mansion and use the back yard as one of those kiddie playgrounds like they have at McDonalds. Lets turn the Bucks County Playhouse into a multiplex movie theatre and put klieg lights outside of it to draw people from throughout the Delaware Valley. Why not just bulldoze the entire riverfront area adjacent to the Playhouse and turn it into a boardwalk complete with
amusement park rides, cotton candy vendors and freak shows. In fact, maybe we could just demolish all of the historic buildings in New Hope and replace them with brand new fake old looking buildings like they have in Peddlers Village. We could become Peddlers Village East!!! Isn't that who we are trying to compete with anyway? If we can't beat then...why not just copy them!
Respectfully...Allan P. Duncan

Letter to Yenta 04/30/01

On the Logan Inn's renovations:
Placing a geometrically pointed monstrosity on one of the towns most historic buildings is hopefully something the owners will reconsider. This type of "improvement" ignores the towns history and sets the tone for another Wildwood.   It may look great to the bubble gum and gold chain crowd - but these types of themes may eventually leave other tourists searching for less crass destinations (to spend their time and money). New Hope can settle for luring in the masses (who want a day of cheap food and cheap nic nacs) or conversely also try to attract the tourists that will buy antiques, art works and quality goods. If no attention is paid to preserving the towns architectural history (or what is left of it), then possibly the only businesses that will remain in New Hope (in the long haul) will be pizza joints and shops selling plastic souvenirs made in China.
Yes - a number of Lambertville's building have received improvements over the past years. Those improvements were tastefully done with an eye towards preserving the town's history.
Hats off to Lambertville and it's property owners.
New Hope's history is one of its biggest assets and it's going fast (due to less than far sighted thinking and the quest for "insto" bucks). New Hope's history is akin to the Amazon rain forest - once the pillage is complete, it's gone for good.

Dear Yenta:

I feel that I must disagree about your feelings on the Logan inn.
This town is long over due for a pick me up. I remember when the streets where so busy, you had to walk in the streets to get to your car. Not anymore. Sure business' are doing O.K., but not great.
I know that there are a lot of people that will disagree with me, but think about it.....
Lambertville was never an attraction until the last 15 yrs. Why? Because they have spent a lot of time and a lot of money making their building look better. Adding lots of shops. Which I realize was pain staking? But worth while.
So why not let Carl, his family & George Michael help make a better New Hope. Of all the past experiences that I have encountered, I feel that this is this in the best interest of our town

Fondly,
Judy Butler

Letter to Yenta 04/19/01

Dear Yenta:

Spring is finally here, and everyone seems to be enjoying walking and biking along beautiful towpath in New Hope. Would you please send this request along to your loyal readers?

It is PA law that dogs be kept on a leash while walking along the canal. We saw a poor wild animal get taunted and almost chewed to death by a leash-less dog recently - and there's no need for that. This is a State Park, and it's for the enjoyment and preservation of the wildlife - not just for the pleasure of human beings! There are baby animals popping up everywhere now - and it's enough of a struggle for them to survive in the wild, without also having pet owners think it's "cute" when their dog chases a mother duck in the canal, or an innocent creature becomes a fuzzy dinner for someone's pet.

Thanks!
Janine Witte

New Hope is certainly a fascinating place. If you've never been
here, you really should give it a whirl. The range of characters
you can watch is truly a wonderment. Your best seat, as a rule,
is on the steps of the old Methodist church (sandwiched between
the Mansion Inn which has been restored to its full beauty of
yesteryear with the utmost respect and care to every detail; and
the Logan Inn, currently completing renovations to bring it from
its previous prestigious position of being one of the few buildings
left in town with the facade untouched since the early 1700's down to the level of most of the rest of the buildings in town and into the 21st century with a new skirt! Well, back to the best seat to watch the host of ornately and not so ornately attired and coiffed people. When the Yenta was a kid and even today, the best seat was on the the church steps. But...last week, the best seat in town was the New Hope Fire House banquet hall where stalwart members of the "straight" community competed for the coveted title of "Queen for a Day." Under the byline of "New Hope,
where the straight aren't so narrow," the 8 courageous straight men, were dressed in drag and put on a performance which will long be remembered. Their audience...a sellout crowd of over 400 howled, laughed and cried uncontrollably as these men ranging in age from about 35 to 75 gave the performance of their lives. The men were dressed and had their make-up done by professional drag queens who also guided and correographed the routines for each contestant. The list of contestants boasted the mayor, head of borough council, the head of the street department, and
one of our policemen among the group.

And of course, you want to know the outcome... Well, Larry Keller, the mayor came in first place with Frank Cosner Jr, of the Pidcock Agency coming in as Runner Up. The men are already looking forward to fulfilling their role as Queen for a Day by presiding over future events and making public appearances at the Shad Fest in Lambertville among other engagements.

And the reason for all of this...bring the town together for a great
time while raising money to RESTORE the old town hall. And riase mnney they did... over $16,000 was raised by the benefit. Great job by everyone involved. It was fabulous. Plans are already in the works for next year's benefit.

The Yenta is requesting that anyone with photographs who would like to share, to scan them and send them off to newhopepa.com to post on the internet. The Yenta knows that the world is waiting to see them.

Meanwhile...FYI...the Mansion Inn is not going to open a disco as the rumor floating around implies.

Bob Gerenser's boat is still downstream waiting for rescue.

All of the shopkeepers are in the process of sprucing up their
storefronts in preparation for the Spring rush of tourists...while George Micheals continues to move along on the Union Square project.

The development opposite the Giant Shopping center continues to grow, as fiberboard houses are dotting the landscape and roads are being cut in. Good bye--Bucks County PA. And you really want a 202 bypass??

Letter to Yenta 04/18/01

To all my New Friends,

I wish to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in Wednesday's fundraiser for my campaign held at Odette's Restaurant. The staff at Odette's was helpful and gracious. Attendance was good, spirits were high and discussion was lively. One concern expressed by everyone was the fact that New Hope can do better. With you, the citizens of New Hope, as my
advisors, I would like to take the town of New Hope to that better place.

This has been an excellent start to what will be a long road to travel. The beginning of that road is listening to what citizens have to say. Once people are heard, then a direction to head can be established. The middle part of the journey will be to convince people to march together on that path to excellence. The finish line will be when we achieve the victory over the incumbent candidate in the spring primary election. Then together we can
make the much-needed changes.

As we figuratively pack our bags to begin this journey there is plenty of room for all. We need people who will host coffee klatches in their homes and to campaign in their neighborhoods. We need people to host fund raisers so we can prevail against the well funded, entrenched old guard. We need people willing to hang posters. Most of all we need YOU to believe that change is possible. Come and join the team already on this exciting journey.

Once again I challenge the incumbent mayoral candidate to a series of debates. The town will really benefit from that exchange of ideas.

Whatever your talent, now is the time to help. To volunteer time or to contribute much needed funds please call me or write an E-mail to www.newhopeunderground.com.

Thanks again,

Dave Fleming
Republican Candidate for Mayor

Letter to Yenta 04/12/01

Dear Yenta
I remember for the last ten years walking by the Logan Inn and the Red Canal Barn in my morning and evening walks, history was once alive.
New Hope was once a Colonial town, rich in the birth of our independence in the 1770’s, serving as a refuge for General Washington and his army, and it was also a town rich in the Canal trade of the 1800’s. Then it moved into the 1900’s and now 2001 where it stands, and where it slowly but surely has washed out the remains of its significant past and its history. Yes, some basic building structures remain, but any historical accuracy is gone.
Many people share my views about history and preservation, and I have become their voice. Yet others ask me why I care so much and why I am so vocal. My response is and will always be, these buildings are our link to the past and once defined New Hope’s uniqueness. Perhaps naively I always believed there would be enough people who cared about these buildings to make sure that they would not only be saved, but preserved.
Like many I felt that we could entrust our history and its preservation to the town’s leadership and developers. Regretfully, we have now veered off into a tragic ending. The damage is done. I am one individual and I spent the better part of last summer in the hospital, there is only so much one person can do. Let’s just say that both the bad guys and the good guys are the same guys. It seems as if there isn’t any difference between the ones
that wear the white hats and those with the black hats in New Hope. Not content with the façade’s destruction, the Logan Inn now has a deliberate mix of conflicting architectural types, none of which even remotely resemble the original structure. Bulldoze over artifacts, cover up the original well, redesign and renovate. What we once had was one of America’ oldest continuously run taverns, what we now have is simply a renovated restaurant and inn, a Dickens’ Christmas! The price of progress I guess, but why did it have to be so costly. I would like to suggest an ordinance that would require anyone building onto an 18th or early 19th century site be required to get a phase one archeological study. In most cases this would only be a delay of a few weeks. This would be a small price to pay to preserve our past. The Red Canal Barn is beyond my reach. I gave it my all. Yet, I have recently been asked to give my historical expertise to help get a variance preventing an outdoor staircase. Why do you need me now, I ask, after the
building is already destroyed? I wanted to help when it was still possible to save it. A local organization came forward, and they had everything in place to get funding to preserve this building. What we needed was time, it was refused. Now the Red Barn will be renovated and changed.  Renovation and development have become the mantra of New Hope. As a well traveled individual, I realize that change is inevitable, but does it need to make New Hope’s landmarks unrecognizable and lost forever.

Respectfully,
R. Iain Haight-Ashton

Letter to Yenta 04/12/01

Good day everyone.
Does anyone know who we can contact regarding the deteriorating state of RT 32 between Washington Crossing and New Hope?. There appears to be more trash each day and no one seems to be responsible for the clean up effort. The Bucks County office referred me to the Solebury Township office who in
turn referred to Penn DOT.
Also, who would we have to call to complaint about a property, also located on RT. 32, that is in such disarray it doesn't merit to be classified as a junkyard?. I'm sure everyone has seen it and has been disgusted by its condition as much as we, our friends and neighbors have. Can our Borough Council put some pressure on the proper State/County/Township government agency to get these issues resolved???
I know that both of these problems lie outside New Hope's jurisdiction, but we all have to live with it unless something is done.
Thank you,
Pedro Ortiz-Villajos

HATS OFF TO HERB & HIS GANG,

I have never enjoyed myself as much as I did that night.

I spoke with Herb a few days before, he told me that I will be totally surprised. He said that I will come to him at the end of the night, and say WOW!

At the end of the night, I saw Herb and said you were right WOW!!!!!

The best part of the evening was seeing all of New Hope come together. What an awesome community we are fortunate to live in.

Bravo to New Hope!!!
Bravo to all the people that helped make this a very memorable evening for all of us.

Dear Yenta:

Let me introduce myself. My name is Judy Curcio-Butler.
I have been in this area for more then 25 yrs. My family owned and operated the Golden Pump Restaurant on South Main for 27 yrs.
I have seen people coming and going. imagine, I am only 40 yrs old, and have seen a lot. But I think that right now is the best New Hope that I have ever seen.
I have never seen a community come together as much as our town.
My husband Roger E. Butler is running for Borough Council. I do realize that I may be a little prejudice.
As his self appointed campaign manager, please consider voting for him. He has had a very successful business in New Hope. As well as great reputation.
He is always their to donate food, time and sweat for New Hope. He put on a benefit for Tucker Mahoney at his restaurant El Taco Loco.
Roger loves this community, as do I. Let's give him a chance to show you his dedication.

Dear Yenta:

I can't remember the last time when an entire community got together and laughed so hard as we did on the night of the
Queen for a Day "pageant." Those eight men had a lot of courage and good sportsmanship. They should ALL be congratulated for putting on such an enjoyable show!
Food was great, things went smoothly, and everyone was smiling! Kudos to the Queen for a Day organizers, directors, and to the tireless efforts of the eight "coaches". What a transformation they achieved!
On to the next great event!!!!!!!

With many thanks for a fantastic party---
