Delaware Bay - Lewes, DE

Lewes
was the first sheltered port where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It was a favorite port of call for pirates (such as Blackbeard, Avery and Kidd), until 1698. Many skilled pilots resided in Lewes. They were needed by the ships who were navigating up the shoaled waters of the Delaware river to ports in Wilmington and Philadelphia.
